AKRON, Ohio -- The Hygenic Corporation, manufacturer of Thera-Band®
products, has developed Soft Weights, a soft alternative to traditional isotonic
dumbbells that provide users more versatility for strength training and
rehabilitation exercises.
Soft Weights are hand-held and ball-shaped isotonic weights. They are unique
because the size of the ball does not increase as weight increases, allowing for
a consistent and functional grip as the user progresses in resistance. This
allows for either unilateral or bilateral exercise progressions, either
independently, or with a partner or plyometric rebounder.
"Soft Weights offer a functional and accommodating grip that cannot be
accomplished with traditional hand-held dumbbells or cuff-weights," said
Phil Page PT, ATC, manager of clinical education and research for Thera-Band
products. "They also have a softer grip sensation than steel weights and,
for that reason, are appealing to patients or older adults who may be
intimidated by a hard, steel dumbbell."
"The weights' 4 ½" diameter makes them very easy to use and portable
for use anywhere," Page added.
Soft Weights follow the Thera-Band system of progressive exercise. They are
available in six color-coded weights, ranging from tan, which weighs ½
kilogram/1.1 pounds, to black, which weighs 3 kilograms/6.6 pounds. The weights
increase in ½ kilogram/1.1 pound increments. Soft Weights allow users to
increase weight in resistive training and rehabilitation programs without
changing grip or technique, which is fundamental to the principles of
progressive exercise. Similar to the popular "medicine ball" workouts,
the Thera-Band Soft Weight also has specific applications in the rehabilitation
setting.
"Soft Weights will appeal to everyone, from athletes to the elderly,
particularly persons with arthritis and limited grasping ability. Soft Weights
are ideal because individuals won't fear injuring themselves by dropping the
weight on their foot," Page said.
Page also noted, "Because of their comfort and ease of progression, many
individuals may improve compliance of resistive exercise programs using Soft
Weights." Strength training is recognized by the American College of Sports
Medicine (ACSM) as a vital component in any general fitness program. The ACSM
also recommends strength training for older adults, particularly those with
chronic diseases such as osteoporosis or osteoarthritis.
In addition to traditional strengthening exercises for the upper and lower body,
the Soft Weights can be used for many other applications, making it a very
versatile exercise tool. Their soft texture allows for functional grip or
exercises for individual fingers which aid in hand and wrist rehabilitation. The
Soft Weight can also be used for plyometric exercises for the upper extremity
with a rebounder or mini-trampoline. Balance training or stabilization
exercises can also be performed using the Soft Weight for patients with lower
extremity or lower back injuries. Thera-Band Soft Weights are accompanied by a
guide that demonstrates proper exercises for a variety of applications.
Thera-Band products are recognized for their quality and effectiveness with
rehabilitation specialists and professional sports trainers.
